Hip-Hop and Political Change? Apparently Not

The Manhattan Institute's John McWhorter says that hip-hop is not a vehicle for positive change, but rather a destructive force for black Americans.
Another one of those "reformed" black guys who act as a vehicle to legitimate conservative, and moderate white America's history of racism and paternalistic, third-person omniscient solutions.
I generally can't get myself to like anyone who can easily dismiss something that is important to a chunk of the population. He seems to goes out of his/her way to hate on something he doesn't really understand, kind of like a spy...or...a stalker. He reminds me of Steve Bowman's piece "
You know what's stupid? Everything I don't understand!"
However, upon reading more of McWhorter's material
here and listening to an
NPR interview, I can't help but feel sorry for the man. I truly do.
Why? Two things: He's a stalker and he's passive-aggressive.
1) Keeping true to that identity as a stalker, he doesn't actually speak to anyone to uncover any truth.
In his main article against hip-hop, he leads with an observation about some kids at a KFC. The kids are loud and annoying in a public or quasi-public space, behavior virtually unheard of from any group or subgroup of teenagers in America. So, what's to blame?
You guessed it! The ASSUMED soundtrack of their lives. These Black kids at KFC...must be that damn Hip-hop! A-HA!
In his radio interview, he mentioned that when he speaks, everyone has been supportive and no one has bothered him. No one, except maybe "one hothead" gets riled up at his talks, probably because he bores his supporters or would-be supporters and he passively aggressively hides from those who want to call him out.
2) When explaining his avoidance of opponents and potential detractors, he calls himself a "homebody", code word for divorced-from-reality, scared, linguist.
I feel bad for him mostly because behind the flowery high-falutin' language and the degrees from Stanford and Berkeley is just a scared, passive-aggressive stalker.
Even though the writer of these books and articles is kind of pathetic in his attempts to disparage hip-hop, what he says is essentially still the same stuff that critics of hip-hop from casual to extreme haters use, so its still worth a response.
I can agree with a few things he says:
-Some of the most promoted and commercialized are those without real positive messages. But I can see where it comes from and I don't think it goes anywhere.
-I agree that we could do without the sexism and violence but they'll keep saying what they want to say
-People do need to adapt to their life circumstances
Where he and I differ is that he seems bent on extracting the worst elements of hip-hop and subsequently, rooting it out based on that.
It's kind of like trying to ban Christianity because you don't like the KKK or Terry McVeigh. In each case, you're trying to look for the worst elements of something you don't like without fairly weighing its good elements.
From this vantage point, this attempt to extract the worst of the genre, his argument boils down to two things:
1) According to him, Hip-hop is responsible for the destruction of the black American.
You'd think that the arrival of hip-hop caused the destruction of the 'hood.
"The rise of nihilistic rap has mirrored the breakdown of community norms among inner-city youth over the last couple of decades. It was just as gangsta rap hit its stride that neighborhood elders began really to notice that they’d lost control of young black men, who were frequently drifting into lives of gang violence and drug dealing. Well into the seventies, the ghetto was a shabby part of town, where, despite unemployment and rising illegitimacy, a healthy number of people were doing their best to “keep their heads above water,” as the theme song of the old black sitcom Good Times put it."
He seems to operate on this romanticized and historicized viewpoint that the 'hood was a rough place but still a place where this "healthy number" of people were doing their best.
Healthy numbers?
I remember a talk with the LA Times Homicide Blogger, Jill Leovy where she said that the black man murder rate has always been staggeringly high from Jim Crow until now. Her point was that there's deep a history of homicide within the black community.
In 1976, before talks of handguns, gangs, crack stuff, the black male homicide rate according to the US Justice Department was still 7x higher than those of whites. In, 1960, according to the Centers for Disease Control, death rates for black man were 14x higher, and in 1950 black male death rates were 17x higher than those of whites.
So bad things were still happening before hip-hop. I think the only difference with hip-hop in the picture is that it gives people like him to pick at and justify structural injustices and hegemonies.
2) His conclusion: hip-hop is antithetical to "helping people help themselves..."
He takes aim at those who try to spread the positive messages. Cites the Dead Prez as an example of conscious hip-hop. He mentions that they're pretty good at noting the insufficient employment opportunities. But he criticizes them for advocating civil and social rights, i.e. standing on top of Capital Hill.
The classic pull-by-the-bootstrapping man, he advocates a personal anecdote to a social and structural problems. He says that plenty of UPS jobs and delivery boys do not require college degrees and they can live perfectly legit middle-class existences. Guess he missed the talks about the disappearing middle-class, here, here, and here.
McWhorts then goes on to criticize those who do try to make their money in the underground economy. I would've thought that he'd think the underground is the adaptive way of making money, and would've applauded them.
Ultimately, Dr. McWhorter's prescription for his fellow black man is a whole dose of mediocrity. He offers a hellvua lot less that than the rappers from the neigbhorhood with the money and the women. He's essentially telling them to become drones of everyone else while other people get their action.
In the end, rap and hip-hop is only a medium of expression. It's a piece of marketing, but it doesn't drive any widespread violence that wasn't already endemic. If people want to destroy, that's usually a highly personal decision. I doubt that people make negative life or death decisions based on what they hear from an artist.
Hip-hop is mostly a tool for empowerment because it breeds expression. It has the potential to inspire. A tool for empowerment because this is where people can find their strength.
But ultimately, it's only a tool, it's not going to be the only thing that will make or break a segment of the population.

Burger King Exec Posts Comments against Coalition Workers Using Daughters' Account"As the Coalition of Immokalee Workers prepares to deliver more than 60,000 petitions to Burger King headquarters in Miami today, the daughter of Burger King’s vice-president Stephen Grover confirmed her father is responsible for online postings vilifying the coalition."
"I think this shows a deep arrogance that a person at such a high level in the corporation would be directly involved in that type of harassment,” Stauber said. “This a huge black eye for the Burger King corporation. It’s the type of situation that lands companies in public relations textbooks on how not to engage the press, the public and your critics."
I'm going to give a weird response right about now.
Thank you Mr. Steve Grover for at least acknowledging the voice, something lots of people in your position would not even do. You went out of your way to smash people's human rights, and well, I just feel bad for you, man.

Being an 'Activist': Why to Care
Dreams Before Waking
Unknown, 1983
Despair falls:
the shadow of a building
they are raising in the direct path
of your slender ray of sunlight
Slowly the steel girders grow
the skeletal framework rises
yet the western light still filters
through it all
still glances off the plastic sheeting
they wrap around it
for dead of winter
At the end of winter something changes
a faint subtraction
from consolations you expected
an innocent brilliance that does not come
though the flower shops set out
once again on the pavement
their pots of tight-budded sprays
the bunches of jonquils stiff with cold
and at such a price
though someone must buy them
you study those hues as if with hunger
Despair falls
like the day you come home
from a work, a summer evening
transparent with rose-blue light
and see they are filling in
the framework
the girders are rising
beyond your window
that seriously you live
in a different place
though you have never moved
and will not move, not yet
but will give away
your potted plants to a friend
on the other side of town
along with the cut crystal flashing
in the window-frame
will forget the evenings
of watching the street, the sky
the planes in the feathered afterglow:
will learn to feel grateful simply for this foothold
where still you can manage
to go on paying rent
where still you can believe
it's the old neighborhood:
even the woman who sleeps at night
in the barred doorway---wasn't she always there?
and the man glancing, darting
for food in the supermarket trash---
when did his hunger come to this?
what made the difference?
what will make it for you?
What will make it for you?
You don't want to know the stages
and those who go through them don't want to tell
You have your four locks on the door
your savings, your respectable past
your strangely querulous body, suffering
sicknesses of the city no one can name
You have your pride, your bitterness
your memories of sunset
you think you can make it straight through
if you don't speak of despair
What would it mean to live
in a city whose people were changing
each other's despair into hope?---
You yourself must change it.---
what would it feel like to know
your country was changing?---
You yourself must change it.---
Though your life felt arduous
new and unmpped and strange
what would i mean to stand on the first
page of the end of despair?Labels: Activating the Community, Philosophes de Vita

If You Want to Become an Activist. . .
Still I am the same B-to-the-Jizzay on your fizzay. Crossing you up and shit on the basketball court and whoopin' and hollering for them
Chi-town Bullies. I don't think I'm at the point where I'd die for a cause. I just think change is possible, but that there aren't enough people involved and that the way some groups approach civilians is just wrong. These groups need a diversity of opinion in my opinion. Plenty of civilians believe shit should be changed, but are just too disenchanted or scared to do anything because of the confusion and overbearing number of organizations and groups that solicit shit, so it'd help that as many cits and civs get their shit together and fire the contrived shit up to the activist groups' shit.
These are some of the links of what I believe are problems that really need to be solved:
Challenging Corporate Authority
Basically these links are about making this US of A place an actual democracy, where the power is in the people be it a single mom working at Vons (Safeway of the South !) on Sunset or a sleazy Manhattan Beacher with a two-story house, No Soliciting signs, and 3 gigantic pitbulls to protect shit he shouldn't have overpaid for in the first place.
180/MDE
Alliance for Democracy
Citizens Council on Corporate Issues
Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County
Program on Corporations, Law, and Democracy
Polaris Institute
Reclaim Democracy!
Workgroup on Citizen Authority
Environmental Justice
Unlike the traditional environmentalist movements, this cause is about helping out disadvantaged folks' environment. It's about treating a South Central Los Angeles the same way as a Beverly Hills.
South African Exchange Program for Environmental Justice
Southwest Network on Environmental and Economic Justice
Indigenous Environmental Network protects Mother Earth
U.S. EPA
Labor Solidarity
Basically, this is about letting the workers have a life.
Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and the Environment
Campaign for Labor Rights
International Labor Rights Fund
Labor Notes
National Labor Committee
National Mobilization Against Sweatshops
Responsible Shopping Guide
STITCH
UNITE
United Farm Workers
United Steelworkers
United Students Against Sweatshops
U.S./LEAP
U.S. Dept. of Labor No Sweat
Workers Rights Consortium
I got a directory of these problems-solver organizations from
this book.
And if you want stuff on just the antiracism, environment, farming, health, and popular education, there's more in that book.

Do Not Support Environment CaliforniaLet me just say from the onset that these people,
Environment California released me within less than a week. I simply did not meet their quota because I did not think I had to.
The shady people of Environment California didn't even know there was a quota to meet within a few days. I was lead to believe that I had all the time in the world to improve and become a better canvasser, but they did not give me the chance. As a result, they have fractured my confidence towards accomplishing anything quickly. So much for caring for the people (well they did before my fatal 3rd day acting as if I was the best thing since sliced bread; I didn't even exist during the 3rd day). I'm against the organization for what they did to me and what they are doing to other people, an not necessarily against the environmental issues. So do not take this post as an excuse to be apathetic towards social issues. This is a post directed at Environment California, and Environment California only.
The stuff in this post is through my own observation. In a nutshell, here's what's wrong about them in my eyes (with wrong meaning that they hurt the consumers and are not really progressive thinkers at all):
1) They are yet another business first, consumer second organization
2) They confuse and sucker you into joining their group
3) They make you lose the bigger picture; you should decide what you spend your money on
4) It's highly ineffective
Environment California is a group of lobbyists ranging from college students to career advocates that barge into your neighborhood and ask you for money and signatures door-to-door. Here's their sales pitch:
"Hi. How are you?
My name is __________ and I'm with Environment California! We're the statewide environmental group.
Right
now we're working to fight air pollution here in _________. *
Unfortunately,
almost 90% of the state's electricity comes from dirty power plants. We know that
pollution from these plants causes asthma, birth defects,
and lung disease.
We could dramatically reduce this pollution if we got more of our electricity from cleaner sources like solar power, so we're working to pass a law that would make solar more affordable.
The utility companies just want to build more dirty power plants, and they've got some powerful lobbyists...but we can
definitely win if we build enough public support, and that's why we're out here today.
Here's our statement of support (
hand over clipboard, point to statement). This outlines our work.
The best way for
you to support this effort tonight is to join as a member of Environment California. We suggest a contribution of $60 for the year, because it's our members that give us the resources it takes to win.
With your membership, we'll send you a newsletter during the year to keep you posted on our progress. And the best way to contribute is with a check."
*connotes Southern California, Los Angeles or town.
First of all, they make the issue confusing as to what exactly are people's options in supporting their assembly or congressmen. They give the impression that you have to join their group as the only alternative to fighting the organization. Secondly, Their canvassers are not told to research the issues and be informative, but rather be salespeople. It's an elitist organization in itself as the best salespeople or "fundraisers" stay on and canvass with beginners holding scripts every day. They do not fight for the underrepresented. The people who do not have a script and talk about it with enthusiasm are the more experienced salespeople, which means they've lost some genuine or realness. Thirdly, they are the traditional type of environmentalists and they do not recognize racism and classism as issues to the cause like the
new and improved environmental justice movements. Environment is what people make of it and they deserve to decide what to do with it without being misled. Don't impulsively throw away 15 dollars for becoming a member of their group. Finally, the kicker is they will ask you for 60 dollars and eventually make their way down to $5-15. My advice: Just take some information from them, pick their brains (at least the experienced ones) and scram.
Don't support Environment California or at least do not fork over more than 10 dollars when they come to your door because you will regret it and this organization doesn't give a shit. CALPIRG, Western Service Workers, I still support because they are people/consumer-based. And CALPIRG, Western Service Workers, are disassociated with this group. Those consumer-based organizations are not as exclusive and cutthroat as Environment California, who heavily target middle to upper class people (that means watch out if you live in Santa Monica, Valencia, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach, Pasadena, Agoura Hills).
There are reasons CALPIRG distanced itself from Environment California as a different entity on which I am heavily speculating: 1) Environment California is not really for the consumer and their rights, which is what CALPIRG does 2) CALPIRG does not canvass, and try to keep together a fake smile 3) Who gives a shit about pollution ? A little bit of pollution in the lungs helps build strength in the lungs anyway. 4) CALPIRG actually empowers the underdogs and gives voice to those who do not have any, whereas Environment California smothers the big dogs in advocation of the opinion that they are working for the people.
In comparison with my experience as a Western Service Workers canvasser, I found myself not caring for the people as much as I thought they needed be. This Environment California group is definitely about business and making a lot of money instead of for the people because these canvassers get paid $275-475 a week depending on how much they sell, which is where half the funding from Environment California goes. They are about getting to as many houses as possible. In fairness to them, the canvassers work hard going to about 100 houses a day. However, as one of their leaders told me, no one would canvass if it was not profitable. To sustain profits and remain a business, they garner up an issue every season of the year. Another ringleader talked about how car pollution accounted for 70% of the pollution in the air rather than the actual power plants. So everyone just get a Honda Civic or
Toyota Prius and call it a day. But right now the moneymaker is the Solar Homes Bill, and they're drumming up support for that. The solar bill is in assembly now.
If you are interested in passing the solar bill, you can write to assemblywoman Carol Liu of Pasadena and George Nakano of Manhattan Beach for example. You can find and contact other assembly members by visiting
this site. Or if you feel like appealing to the national government you can
contact Barbara Boxer or
Senator Feinstein. You could also
contact the U.S. House of Representatives. For the California state government, you can find your state senator
here and find your senator's e-mail dress
here.
Don't let Environment California think for you.
It's largely ineffective anyway. Sure they will point out victories in the environment, but they never state their involvement with the victories. Ask em about that.
People don't need to be pressured into giving up money for something that they do not have the full truth about.
People deserve to know and find the truth on their own. Take my observations however way you want to, except as libel or any kind of tort because my info was just taken from observation and my own opinion and instinct.
I felt like I just got my 6th criminal star on GTA 3. . .

Don't Mock the 'Hood
Really. Don't. Who are you to anyway ?
Earlier in the school year I mocked the shit out of it. I was a dumbass sort of white-washed Asian, who could care less. Amidst the Western Service Workers canvasses, science as cultural practice, writing, and community activism readings, I've changed my mind yet again this year. There's been a lot of ideology overhaul or discovery for me just this past week alone also because of the numerous papers I've had to write, so here goes one of them:
Affirmative action is a boost into social capital and better representation in the media in a world dominated by straight, white, middle-class males. It's not condescending because it helps preserve people's dignity and empowers them. It's not a substitute for hard work, but rather just a door to open where it would not be available. It works well as a full-fledged jump start. Charity is condescending. But people won't question that because no one is concerned with the dignity of those that actually benefit from affirmative action and it takes their power away by discrediting them. It's about living up to standards developed by the powerful of this country.
The minority will often be under and misrepresented, MISJUDGED, looked upon with condesecension according to the majority's own developed standards because it's how the majority stays afloat. It's shown when people try to mock talk like they're from the 'hood as if white middle-class language is something superior like from the semi-revolutionary group Mindless Self Indulgence. Even though their shit sounds jumpy and sort of tight, some of their lyrics judge and hierarchize as they the "rebellious" white guys freely use the n-word and mock lyricize attacking the infusion of rap and hip-hop into pop culture. Fine, attack pop culture, but using the n-word is just inviting more people to use it and condescend on actual ghetto people, rather than just pop culture, because they'll all have different meanings as to the lyrics of the songs. Perceptions of the minority are contorted all over the place, but they revolve around the same stereotypes and principles evoked from media shit like that. On the other hand, other than the subverted class, no one mocks a CEO because it's what is considered at the top of the hierarchy. It's considered 'normal' and 'high-class,' and what sticks with the majority group applies to all groups.
Secondly, majorities will always dominate the media because of their versatility. We can't have a white entertainment channel because they're already all over the place. They've already got a diversified opinion base established in the media which is why they can't be classified as just "white." Different minorities are usually relegated to one stereotype. For example, Asian guys are always viewed as nerds, but Asian girls are always highly sexualized ala Matrix 2 ('Yell !). Asian guys usually solve the complex problem of a movie but don't get the *action* that their female counterparts always get. . .it's why I sometimes feel uncomfortable when I see white guys interacting with Asian girls with short skirts. Sounds racist, but it's just an unsettling hunch I've really tried to kick. White guys don't have to deal with this because they're subtly everywhere.
In this world and US society dominated by perception and taken in the context of sociological effects, affirmative action is there to bring that diversity of opinion to the minorities for different perceptions across America. It brings more people into the top universities and into more media. And more opinions. It's only reverse discrimination for some individual rather than a whole. Some people may not have the capital to live up to the majority's standards. There's a reason people are called "minorities." You don't know how much pride I felt whenever I saw any Filipino represented in the American media be it in the LA Times or the FBI's most wanted. It was pretty de-moralizing not seeing any of my own on the daily TV, which made me want so badly to be white when I was 9 and at the dawn of my NBA dreams. Ha.
But for now, minorities are relegated to standardized stereotypes. So we're all lumped together in different minority groups by the media. So in response, when you mock one aspect of any minority culture, which may not apply to all minorities, you talk about all minority shit because it's our right to defend and grow out of the perceptions from mass white American culture.

A Deeper Look at the Western Service Workers' Association

Cross that last spiteful post about Western Service Workers' Association out !
Don't take that into your minds ! Take this post in !
OK so last time I exaggerated millionfold. I fucked up majorly, Shaq-style.
Let me just say that even though those who work for the Western Service Workers' Association may not be the most affable people in the world, I respect them for going balls out from 9A-9P EVERY. . .FUCKIN'. . .DAY. . .just for the cause of severely underpaid service workers (fast fooders, farmers). I was wrong for neglecting to look at where they came from and attacking them on this blog space of mine based on my own selfish bad experience. I failed to look at things in context because I just wanted to write something.
Today, Erwin, Jenny, Raj, (Community Activism group) and I along with about seven other Western Service Workers walked into these "shotgun" (three rooms in a row) apartments with roads consisting of rocks, mud, and puddles in a little farming town of Pajaro. They carried a strong belief in the Lady of Guadalupe, cars, and television but none for any form of organization. I thought that they thought, "who are these young, privileged, college kids to tell us what we need ?" But that initial reaction lasted all of 2 minutes, and so it goes that as long as we can help them, they can be happy. We walked in and listened to stories about how a man supporting his family got fired because of an injury, or how a woman in a house the size of 2 dorm rooms owed $6,000 because she couldn't keep up with house payments. No one's there to stand up for them.
Except for Western Service Workers Association. Western Service Workers Association is an extremely unique organization. It provides all unionized benefits like health care, legal service, food and clothing to those who can't join unions. They keep the integrity of the workers by simply giving them a hand with material needs, rather than giving them handouts. They're not officially a union so that they don't get the workers in trouble, and should the workers get in trouble, the whole organization will shoulder the blame. But they avoid too much publicization so as to avoid as much legal trouble as possible. Membership fee is 62 cents a month and $7.44 a year or whatever they can give, yet the residents are extremely strapped that they barely commit money even though they seem really engaged. Sound all good right ?
And I haven't even gotten to the most important thing.
The most important Western Service Association provides those service workers is protection so that they won't get screwed by the big guys. These residents don't want to get fired because a lot of them have young mouths to feed. They've got bills to pay.
So basically, Western Service Workers puts its neck on the line for people who may not be able to help them down the line. . .and I respect that. You should too.

Community Activists are Assholes
At least the ones in Western Service Workers' Association are.
This is a small-scale organization operating in Santa Cruz. I'm sure they have the best of intentions, but somehow they've been programmed to tune out the real world.
I had called them just to make sure they knew I was coming to do a project on community activists last Thursday night. The respondent told me that she was going to call me back. Three hours and still no answer, I called those bastards and they told me that it would be great to come in on any day of the weekend. We agreed on Sunday, and I subsequently sent an E-mail to all of my group partners in anticipation of the coming events.
The first time one of my group partners, Jaych, and I went there, we weren't really prepared, but we did have some legitimate questions to ask. I even donated 6 bucks from the last time I went there. In response, this tall, skinny deformed face bitch behind a counter gave us a long shpiel about how she didn't see how helping us would "feed more people, get more members, etc." Then a sort of nice old lady took over from there and told us that we COULD come back on Wednesday 9:30. She was even iffy about that. I was mad we didn't get anything accomplished.
So just this morning, we were there at Wednesday 9 o' clock with all those Western Service people there. As Jaych and I walked from the bus stop, I saw the stout Western Service Dude wobbling to McDonalds for napkins. About 3 minutes later, he creeps up behind us and tells Jaych, "excuse me" and I say "cool whatup man." We follow him into the office and right away he asks me "if he could just set up an appointment." He knew I was coming, I called his ass and spent a solid 15 minutes with him on the phone. . .
This time I come super-prepared with 4 sheets of the same survey questions for various workers there. I told him that it would take only 4 minutes to answer these survey questions I had prepared. He took about a minute to look at it and decided that those answers could be figured out when we came there on Saturday and observed. He gave me the same shpiel that he didn't see how answering MY project questions would help "feed more people, get more members, (insert more stupid rubbish here)." As my last resort staring straight at the people in the back and that "sweet" old lady, I asked if anyone else was busy and could spare 4 fucking minutes answering questions. The stout motherfucker gave a wry smile, and nodded, "No, I don't think so."
Fucking chump motherfucker. Oh wait, scratch all the "fuck" in the last sentence cause he seems about as active as piss in a toilet.
I completely understand that our project wasn't their first priority. But I had made some albeit informal, prior plans with them especially for those interviews. I collected 6 bucks for them believing that it would go straight to helping their small-scale piece of shit get off the ground, but it was used for gas. I even canvassed with them once, more than any other groups who will just sort of walk into their organizations. During that canvass (going house-to-house asking people if they want membership), we went through like 50 houses and collected a grand total of 20 bucks. Yeah, way to help the community, jackass. Thanks for wasting my time. I did not expect to get turned away a second time at all.
Activists are supposed to be altruistic, but these fuckers are what give the activists a bad image. They're heads are stuck way up their asses that it makes inmate rape look like a picnic. It's no wonder they're still a small-scale organization --- they alienate anyone who doesn't do what they want them to do. It's what our community activism class terms as "repressive benevolence."
Oh yeah, those Western Service Workers Association wanted promotion, so here's your promotion, bitch:
